Science Strikes Back is a community science fair that has been running in Milwaukee since 2015. Currently, major support is provided through a grant — Scientific Outdoor Experiences (SOE), which is a youth program that helps young people explore environmental science by getting outside, asking questions, collecting real-world data, and learning about the communities where they live.
Through hands-on activities, youth investigate topics such as weather, green space, environmental conditions, and neighborhood resources. They use scientific tools, work with educators and community partners, and learn how data can help people better understand local challenges and opportunities.
A key part of SOE is helping young people see themselves as capable contributors to their communities. Rather than simply learning science in a classroom, youth use science to explore issues that matter to them and share what they learn with others.
SOE concludes with opportunities for youth to present their project at Science Strikes Back with the goal of giving young people a meaningful voice while showing how community-based science can support learning and stronger communities.
